I kissed my children on their heads and my wife passionately on her perfect bow lips before I left this morning. Being the don of Nostra Casa has been my destiny since birth; it’s in my blood. But now I feel it’s harder and harder to leave them. This situation reeks of deception. The question is, who can I trust? The Cassini family has never once gotten involved in our business, and we’ve never had reason to be in theirs. La Famiglia has no tie either, although I’ve had Dante on the dark web checking every nook and cranny for proof of any kind. It would kill my wife if Marco breached our truce. I sighed a breath of relief when Dante informed me that there’s no connection.

Our pilot announces that we’re set to land in ten minutes. He’s also an ex-military sniper, which comes in handy. After landing, I was about to step out when Leo moved in front of me, placing the captured men in front of him. “I’ll go first.” As always, he’s looking out for me.

As we descend, Alessio steps out of a black limousine and waits for us. I make my way forward to greet Alessio. “Your men.” I nod to Leo to release the cuffs.

Alessio notices the bandages and says to his men, “In the car.”

He motions for his driver to drag a man out of the trunk. He’s been beaten badly, one eye swollen shut, and he’s unable to stand on his own as he drops to his knees. I step up and jerk his head back, yanking him by the hair. I search his face. I don’t recognize him.

“I don’t know him.” I gaze directly into Alessio’s eyes. Alessio steps forward and rips the man’s shirt, tearing off the sleeve to uncover a crudely done tattoo. It resembles ours, but not quite. “Leo, Sebastian.” They come forward, and both men remove their shirts to show their designs.

“Only one man does this design. He takes care of every member, and they’re all done in the same place. Only one man has it etched on his chest, and that is me. Take a good look,” I tell Alessio. He steps forward and inspects the arms of Leo and Sebastian. “This is a cheap imitation.” I point to the pathetic man before me.

With a swift and feral kick to man’s kidney, Alessio lets out a roar. “He killed my fiancée. And he said it was a direct order from Moreno Viale.”

“Alessio, I have no reason to kill Angela. I wasn’t even aware you were betrothed,” I tell him calmly.

Alessio pulls out a gun and aims it at the head of the assassin. “That man is the only one with answers. You kill him, we’re searching blind,” I remind him. Alessio’s hand shakes with violent rage, but instead of pulling the trigger, he smashes the butt of the gun into the side of the man’s head, knocking him out.

“They were hoping that pitting two bulls against each other would result in a war, giving whoever this is a way to infiltrate our worlds.
